Recovery
Contrast therapy — heat and cold alternated systematically — is the most evidence-backed non-pharmacological recovery protocol available. Used by Olympic athletes, NHL teams, and serious backcountry hunters alike.
The contrast protocol
Standard: 3 rounds of 15–20 minutes in the sauna at 160–190°F, followed by 3 minutes in the cold plunge at 50°F or below. The heat-cold cycle drives blood from the core to the periphery and back, flushing metabolic waste and delivering oxygenated blood to damaged tissue.
Why Alaska athletes use it
Alaska's outdoor lifestyle creates repetitive stress on joints, tendons, and muscles — skiing, snowmachining, fishing, and hunting all demand recovery. A home sauna and cold plunge cuts recovery time between sessions and keeps athletes active longer into the season.
Equipment recommendations
For serious recovery protocols, we recommend a traditional sauna at 170°F+ and a cold plunge with a dedicated chiller maintaining sub-50°F. The Athlete Recovery Kit bundle packages both.
