Wood Stains and Sealers for Outdoor Saunas
Applying the wrong finish inside a sauna can release toxic VOC fumes when heated. Here is our guide to safe interior and exterior wood protection.
Interior wood must remain unfinished
Never apply varnish, stain, or polyurethane to sauna benches or wall panels. Under high heat, these chemicals off-gas toxic fumes. You may only use paraffin-based sauna oils on benches to prevent sweat stains.
Protecting external cladding
To keep your outdoor cedar from turning grey under Alaska's intense summer UV, apply a non-film-forming exterior wood stain containing UV blocks to the outer staves annually.
