Sauna Insulation Ratings & R-Value Specs
An outdoor sauna in Alaska must combat huge temperature deltas. Sizing insulation and R-value correctly ensures your sauna heats up quickly and holds heat between sessions, saving electricity or firewood.
Cedar stave wall thermal metrics
Single-wall cedar stave barrels (1.5" to 1.75" thick) have a nominal R-value of around R-2 to R-3. While low, their thermal mass and tight circular fit allow them to heat up fast by eliminating dead air corners. However, they lose heat quickly once the heater shuts off.
Double-walled insulated cabins
For the absolute best heat retention in Northern Alaska, we spec double-walled cabins with vapor-permeable rockwool insulation, reaching R-13 to R-22. This keeps the interior hot for hours, even at -40°F.
