Permafrost & Cold-Climate Sauna Foundations
Pouring concrete on active permafrost leads to cracked bases and leaning walls. We outline the engineered foundation strategies our crews use to keep Alaskan saunas level for decades.
Helical piles and structural steel
The gold standard for permafrost soils. Helical steel piles are screwed deep past the active thaw layer, anchoring the sauna platform into stable, permanently frozen soil below.
Gravel cribbing foundations
For areas where pile drivers cannot access, we design non-rigid floating gravel pads. By framing a pressure-treated timber crib and filling it with compacted gravel, the structure shifts uniformly without twisting.
