Contrast Therapy Guide for Alaska Athletes
Contrast therapy (alternating hot and cold) is the fastest way to flush lactic acid and reduce joint swelling. Here are the protocols used by competitive winter sports athletes.
The hot-to-cold vasoconstriction cycle
15 minutes in a 180°F sauna dilates blood vessels. Stepping directly into a 45°F cold plunge for 2 minutes instantly constricts them, creating a pumping effect that clears metabolic waste.
Optimizing session frequency
For active recovery, run 3 full cycles (Hot/Cold/Rest) 3-4 times per week. Avoid ice baths immediately after hypertrophy weight training as cold blunts the initial swelling response needed for muscle growth.
